For a guy who works with technology all day long, it has taken me a long while to get around to blogging. Anyhow this is my first foray into this sphere and I would like to annouce that I am currently working on creating a perl API for the open source database Palo
The API is in the early stages, and isn’t helped by the fact I am continually refactoring the code, however the the beauty of open source is that there is no pressure for me to realease a sub-standard product.
My overall intention when I first started this project was to create a plug-in for the an open source the ETL tool talend.
I will keep you updated on this page of my progress and any trials and tribulations and I go about this endevour
Hugo,
I too came from the big-ticket corporate world, Oracle, Hyperion/Essbase, SAP etc.., glad to see another join the ‘free olap’ struggle. I’ll be watching you

I think we’ve already ‘met’ in Palo forum. Congratulation to your new blog. I’ve linked your RSS in Google Reader to be update.
PALO is a very good open source tool, and the most important thing is that it’s improving quite fast. About two years ago when I downloaded the first version it was unstable and full of bugs, but since March we’ve been using 1.5 in production with success. The improvement of features is also very impressing, we’re testing the rule creator feature of PALO 2.0 BETA, and I think it’s a big step ahead to be a competitor in the future of the big MOLAP systems like ALEA and TM1.
One advantage is that the Jedox developer team is very open-minded, they fixed the bugs I’d reported and it was a great opportunity to translate PALO lay-out on Hungarian that’s very helpful for my colleagues who can’t speak English. (As well as I know this is a first Hungarian speaking OLAP system /maybe TM1 has a Hungarian version as well/. At the moment PALO is available in more than 10 languages.
Good luck for your blog!
