I have basically finished the OLAP prototyping tool. I need to upload the code to somewhere. I will probably do this when I’m back in the UK. So mostly likely at the weekend.
The tool allows you not only create the model but also add rules (which are done by attaching notes to the nodes and set weights. By default the weight of an element will be one. However by using the 1 icon it will be given a weight of minus one.
I have uploaded a few more presentations to screencast. Unfortunately the screen recording tool will only allow for short 5 minute recordings. The first recording is basically talking about BI and setting the scene. The last two recordings are creating cubes and slicing and dicing the data with JPalo.
Hi Hugo,
Your OLAP prototyping tool looks very interesting, so it is going to be a long wait until the weekend.
One question. Is it possible to reuse elements in the Freemind logical model and have the “prototyping tool” create the correct physical model in Palo?
For instance if I would add another hierarchy to the Time dimension with YTD consolidated values – e.g. “Jan YTD” with the element “Jan”, “Feb YTD” with the elements “Jan” and “Feb”, “Mar YTD” with the elements “Jan”, “Feb” and “Mar” and so on.
In Freemind “Jan” would be present multiple times, but it should only be created once in Palo, and then used in multiple consolidations/hierarchies.
Kind regards,

Hi Bent
Yes the element would be added once and it then be rolled up into multiple consolidations. At the consolidation level you can assign the elements different weights if you so choose.

Just found your blog and really like the prototyping tool.
Any idea when it’ll be ready for users like me to play with?
Martyn
Hi Martyn / Bent
Yes sorry I realised that actually the tool is currently preventing elements from consolidating with multiple parents in a Hierarchy. Since this is a common requirement in Financial modelling I have decided I will fix this before making it available.
It shouldn’t be too big a deal to fix this issue, should have it done within the next few days. But I’ve got some other things which I need to do first.
Hi Hugo,
Just passed by your blog again, so I wanted to ask if you have made any progress on finishing your OLAP prototyping tool?
Kind regards,
Bent
