My name is Hugo Pendlebury, I am a Business Intelligence (BI) / ETL practitioner based in the UK. Since I generally work for enterprise class firms I predominantly work with commercial tools such as Informatica, Oracle, SQL Server, SSAS, & Business Objects. I currently work in the Investment / Asset Management field, having previously worked in Investment Banking and consulting across disparate industries ranging from newspapers to shipping.

I have a passion for technology and a keen interest in open source software. After using unix for many years I have come to love the power offered by chaining simple tools together to achieve complex tasks. In addition to typical data related tasks such as creating transformation routines I enjoy programming in java, perl, python and shell scripting. Since my current role has involved the data provisioning for a website my data related interests have expanded to cover not only traditional Business Intelligence and Data warehousing but also encompose content delivery and distribution. In terms of content I have familiarised myself with the most frequently used platforms in the area including interwoven teamsite (data deploy / open deploy) and plone.

Data is the life blood of any business, adding value to that data and enabling effective business making decisions to arise from the analysis of that data is what I’m about. I like to not only provide data but also find ways to make the data easy to understand. To accomplish this I’m a fan of Tufte and sparklines including presenting data in graphical formats and interactive charts, after all a picture speaks a thousand words. In addition charts help avoid the recency effect which occurs when data is presented in a tabular format.

As part of my current interests I am not only monitoring the open source business intelligence sector but also contributing where possible, in the form of submitting code and answering questions on forums.
